It wasnt until the release years of 1987 and 1988 that fractional weights were introduced, giving rise to the coveted 1/10 oz proof coin. History
The journey of fractional-weight Proof Gold Eagles from the United States Mint commenced in 1987 and 1988, initially with the 1/2 oz gold coin in 1987, followed by the 1/4 oz and these 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles in 1988. Except for 2009, the US Mint has consistently produced Proof Gold Eagles. For purchasers of 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagle coins, there have been notable historical changes within this series. Date marks were initially listed in Roman numerals between 1988 and 1991, transitioning to Arabic numerals from 1992 onwards. Furthermore, mint marks on proof coins for fractional weights differ annually. Initially struck at the Philadelphia Mint, 1/10 oz Gold Eagles bore a P mint mark from 1988 to 1993. From 1994 onwards, the West Point Mint took over, issuing these coins with a W mint mark.
