90% Silver Coins & Junk Silver

90% Silver Coins & Junk Silver at BGASC

Modern silver bullion coin programs are made with a purity of at least .999 pure silver. You’ll only see this level of purity in bullion coins as circulation coins now are comprised of nickel, copper, and zinc. However, there was a time when the US Mint included silver content in their circulation coins. 90% Silver Coins encapsulates the era in which circulation coins were made of 90% silver. Junk Silver

90% Silver Coins are often referred to as Junk Silver. This is due to them offering no numismatic value to investors of silver bullion. Most people purchase 90% Silver Coins simply for the silver value of the coin or to add to their collection.

History of 90% Silver Coins

The US Mint first started issuing coins in 1792. Silver Coins in this era were made of a copper and silver mixture to give these coins durability.

From 1794 to 1836, most denominations of US coinage were made with a silver content of 89.2% and a copper content of 10.8%. This was changed in 1836 with the introduction of the Seated Liberty design as the silver content in US coins was upped to 90%.

This lasted until 1964. However, US Half Dollars from 1965 to 1970 contained 40% silver. Nowadays, US Silver Coins are made of a nickel, copper, and zinc mixture.
