Obverse
The obverse of the 2025 British Platinum Britannia features King Charles III. This left-profile portrait, created by Martin Jennings, is the first official coinage image of Charles III and does not feature a crown.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2025 1/10 oz Platinum Britannia highlights Britannia in an elegant, windblown stance against a stormy sea. Philip Nathans 1987 design for the gold Britannia introduced this modern interpretation, merging tradition with a contemporary artistic approach. The reverse also includes enhanced security elements such as dynamic background waves, a latent security image, micro-text surrounding Britannia, and tincture lines on the Union Jack within her shield.
History
Britannias first appearance on British currency dates back to 1672, during the reign of Charles II, where she was depicted on copper halfpennies and farthings. Inspired by ancient Roman designs, John Roettiers artwork presented Britannia seated on a rock, gazing over the sea while holding a shield and spear. Through the years, her design has evolved with added elements such as an olive branch, changes to her shield and helmet, and modifications to her seated posture.
