Design

On the 2 Florida Goldback Gold Note, the design features a tribal woman paddling a dugout canoe through Floridas swamps and estuaries. A glimpse of her village is visible in the distance, while a manatee swims below the canoe in the clear water.

History

When Spanish explorers arrived in Florida in 1513, they encountered several Indigenous tribes, including the Calusa, Timucua, and Apalachee. The Calusa were particularly notable for their advanced society along the Gulf Coast, where they created canals and artificial islands. As skilled sailors and fishermen, they resisted Spanish efforts to colonize their land, maintaining their way of life for many years.
