Obverse
The obverse of the 1900-S $20 Liberty Double Eagle Coin displays a portrait of Lady Liberty. This design depicts Liberty’s head in left-profile relief, adorned with a coronet crown. Surrounding her are 13 stars, with the date mark of 1900 positioned at the bottom of the field.
Reverse
On the reverse side, the 1900-S Pre-33 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features the Great Seal of the United States. The bald eagle faces forward, supporting the national shield while holding arrows in one talon and an olive branch in the other. The Type III reverse design includes the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST in a ring of 13 stars above the eagle, a feature introduced in 1866, along with the denomination clearly engraved as TWENTY DOLLARS.
History
In 1900, the $20 Double Eagle Coin was produced at just two of the United States Mint’s branch mints. The San Francisco Mint struck a total of 2,459,500 coins, featuring its S mint mark on the reverse. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Mint issued coins without a mint mark, totaling 1,874,460 coins.
