Obverse

On the obverse side of the $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle is Lady Liberty. She is depicted in a left-facing profile wearing a coronet with the word Liberty inscribed. The portrait is surrounded by 13 stars, with the year of issue appearing below the image.

Reverse

The reverse side of Pre-33 $20 Liberty Double Eagle coins displays the Great Seal of the United States. This design shows a bald eagle holding a national shield on its chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other. Above the eagle, 13 stars surround the motto In God We Trust, a signature feature of the Type II reverse design used from 1866 to 1876.

History

After the Civil War, the motto In God We Trust was added to U.S. coinage in an effort to unify the nation. The Type II reverse was used exclusively for coins minted from 1866 to 1876 before a new reverse was introduced in 1877.
