Obverse
The obverse of the 1897 Liberty Gold Eagle features a left-profile portrait of Lady Liberty, designed in 1838. She is shown wearing a coronet crown, surrounded by 13 stars, with the year of issue at the bottom of the coin.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 1897 $10 Liberty Eagle displays Christian Gobrecht’s distinctive heraldic eagle design. The eagle is shown front-facing, with the US national shield on its chest. It clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons, symbolizing war and peace. As a Type II coin, it also includes a banner with the national motto above the eagle.
History
In 1897, the Liberty Gold Eagle was produced at three US Mints: Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco. The majority of the coins were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, with just over 1 million produced. In contrast, New Orleans minted 42,500 coins, while the San Francisco Mint struck more than 234,000 pieces.
