First introduced in 1979, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coin is one of the most established gold bullion coins still available. The original series featured a 1 oz gold coin with .999 purity. In 1982, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced fractional-ounce options and improved the gold purity to .9999. Currently, BGASC offers the 2010 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins.

The 2010 1/2 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins available from BGASC come in individual plastic flips. This 1/2 oz coin is the largest of the fractional-ounce coins in this series. Initially, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1982, followed by the 1/2 oz coin in 1986. Later, 1/20 oz (1993) and 1 Gram (2014) coins were added.

Obverse

The obverse of 2010 Canadian Gold Maple Leafs features the final portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Susanna Blunt. This design shows the Queen in right-profile relief without a crown, marking the end of her appearances on these coins.

Reverse

On the reverse side, the 2010 1/2 oz Gold Maple Leaf Coin features the classic sugar maple leaf. Designed by Walter Ott in 1979, this emblem is also used on all silver, platinum, and palladium versions of the Maple Leaf coins, symbolizing Canadas national identity.

History

From 1979 until 2023, Queen Elizabeth II was the sole monarch featured on the obverse of Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Coins. Over these years, her portrait evolved through three different designs. The final portrait, designed by Susanna Blunt in 2003, depicts the Queen at age 79.
