Obverse
The obverse of the 2025 British Gold Britannia features the first-generation portrait of King Charles III. This left-facing effigy, designed by Martin Jennings in 2022, marks the first time King Charles III has appeared on British coinage, replacing the long-standing image of Queen Elizabeth II.
Reverse
On the reverse of 2025 1/4 oz Gold Britannia Coins, Britannia stands tall in an iconic design by Philip Nathan from 1987. She is shown with a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left, while her arm rests on a Union Jack shield. A Corinthian helmet crowns her head, symbolizing both strength and peace.
History
In the years following World War II, Britannia continued to feature prominently on British coinage and in official roles, though her portrayal in popular culture grew more complex. She has appeared in various forms of media, sometimes reflecting the evolving views of Britains role on the global stage.
