Obverse
On the obverse of the 2025 American Gold Eagle, you’ll find Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ celebrated design of Lady Liberty, originally featured on the 1907 $20 Gold Double Eagle. Liberty strides forward, holding a torch and olive branch, with the Capitol building, sunrays, and stars forming a majestic backdrop.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 2025 1/4 oz Gold Eagle presents the American bald eagle in a detailed left-profile portrait. Designed by Jennie Norris and first introduced in 2021, this design replaced the original reverse created by Miley Busiek. It represents the first major update in the Gold Eagle series.
History
Introduced in 1986, the American Gold Eagle marked the return of gold coining in the United States after more than 50 years. It became the purest gold coin issued by the US since 1834. From 1834 to 1933, US gold coins contained 90% gold, and no gold coins were struck between 1933 and 1985. The modern Gold Eagle is composed of 91.67% gold, with the balance made up of 5.33% copper and 3% silver.
