The obverse of these Australian Gold Nugget Kangaroo Coins displays a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The effigy of the Queen has been updated throughout the series, with many coins likely featuring either Raphael Makloufs third-generation effigy or Ian Rank-Broadleys fourth-generation effigy.

Reverse

On the reverse side of the 1/2 oz Gold Nugget Kangaroos, you will find various designs. Since 1990, Perth Mint has highlighted different images of the native kangaroo on the reverse of the coins. Australia is home to four different subspecies of kangaroos, with the Western Grey and the Red Kangaroo being the most frequently depicted on the coins.

History

The Australian Nugget Series was rebranded as the Australian Kangaroo in 1990, but the coins retained the “Australian Nugget” engraving until 2008. Despite these changes, the kangaroo design has been a consistent feature since 1990.
