Obverse

The obverse of the 1877-S $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a portrait of Lady Liberty designed by James B. Longacre in 1849. This design shows Liberty in a left-profile wearing a coronet crown surrounded by 13 stars.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1877-S Pre-33 Liberty Double Eagle Coins features the Type III design. Originally, the coins had the Great Seal of the United States without the national motto and the denomination noted as TWENTY D. The Type II design (1866-1876) added the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. The Type III design, introduced in 1877, changed the denomination to DOLLARS instead of D.

History

In 1877, the United States Mint produced the $20 Liberty Double Eagle at three different locations. During the Civil War and Reconstruction Era, most coin production took place at the San Francisco Mint. The 1877 production was dominated by the San Francisco Mint with 1,735,000 coins, while the Philadelphia Mint and the Carson City Mint produced 397,650 and 42,565 coins, respectively.
