Obverse

The obverse of the 1861-S Liberty Gold Double Eagle features a portrait of Lady Liberty. This left-facing bust is inspired by Greco-Roman designs and shows Liberty wearing a coronet crown, encircled by 13 stars.

Reverse

The reverse of the 1861-S $20 Gold Double Eagle Coin depicts the Great Seal of the United States. This intricate design features a bald eagle holding the US national shield, with arrows of war and an olive branch of peace in its talons.

History

The 1861 release of the $20 Liberty Double Eagles marked a significant moment in the coin’s history. The start of the US Civil War in 1861 led to changes in gold coin production, with the San Francisco Mint becoming the primary production site from 1862-1865. During the Civil War, the Philadelphia Mint would issue relatively nominal numbers of coins while the New Orleans Mint had come under Confederate control during the war and did not produce any coins.
