Obverse

On the obverse of the 2023-S Proof Peace Silver Dollar, you’ll see Lady Liberty. She’s looking to the left and has a shiny crown on her head and her hair blowing in the breeze.

Reverse

The reverse of the 2023-S Proof Peace Dollar has an American bald eagle. This eagle isn’t holding any arrows or a shield it’s just sitting on a branch.

History

The design of the Peace Silver Dollar came from an artistic contest. The US Mint put out a request for designs through the competition and Anthony de Francisci’s design won. DeFrancisci’s wife, Teresa de Francisci, was the model for the Lady Liberty side of the Peace Silver Dollar. She’s like a symbol of peace.

The silver used for minting the Peace Silver Dollar came from the melting down of excess silver Morgan Dollars, which were no longer being actively minted. This recycling of silver helped alleviate the shortage of silver for coin production.
