History

The early 1921 Peace dollars were minted with high relief, which means the design elements were raised prominently. However, the high relief made it difficult to strike the coins fully, resulting in many of them having weak or incomplete details. Later in 1922, the Mint switched to a lower relief design, which made production easier and resulted in crisper, more defined coins.
