History

Today, scientists recognize about ten species of varying size in the Dunkleosteus genus. The largest of these is Dunkleosteus terrelli, which grew between 13-33 feet and weighed up to four tons. Because of their size and armored plates along the head and jaw, Dunkleosteus terrelli enjoyed apex predator status as it navigated the oceans during the Late Devonian period.
