Each 2023 1 oz Proof St. Helena Gold Una and the Lion Coin is considered brand-new. The original mint packaging for this release includes a presentation box, a storytelling booklet, and a Certificate of Authenticity from The East India Company.

Obverse

On the obverse of 2023 1 oz Proof Gold Una and the Lion Coins King Charles III is depicted. Here, the King is shown in left-profile relief sans crown. Inscriptions along the edge include his Royal title, the issuing nation, and the denomination.

Reverse

The reverse of 2023 1 oz Proof St. Helena Gold Coins features Una with her lion sitting beside her. These two characters first appeared in The Faerie Queene, a 1590 poem written by Edmund Spenser. We also find inscriptions on the reverse reading 2023, Una and the Lion.

History

The East India Company partnered with St. Helena in 2020 for The Una and the Lion Series. Since then, there have been four original depictions of Una and her beloved lion, all credited to the artist Glyn Davies. The first three designs also featured Jody Clarks popular Queen Elizabeth II portrait. However, following Elizabeths passing in 2022, Glyn Davies was commissioned to create a new portrait featuring her successor, Charles III. That portrait now makes its first appearance for the 2023 release.
