Obverse

The obverse design of Burnished American Gold Eagles showcases Liberty’s front-facing portrait, featuring a torch in her right hand, an olive branch in her left, sun rays, the U.S. Capitol Building, and a ring of stars. This visual was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907.

Reverse

On the reverse of 1 oz Burnished Gold Eagles, the US Mint features either the original Miley Busiek’s family of bald eagles design or the new portrait of an American bald eagle. The former is more commonly used and can be found on all date marks until mid-2021, while the latter is only found on 2021 Type 2 coins and those issued from 2022 onwards.

History

Burnished Gold Eagles were available from 2006 to 2008 with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz weights. Following a two-year hiatus in 2009 and 2010, the US Mint resumed the series in 2011 with only the 1 oz gold coin.
