Despite having the upper hand in the conflict, the invading Ottoman soldiers were ultimately driven off by the scrappy and intrepid Knights Hospitaller.
Reverse
The coat of arms of the Central Bank of Malta is featured on the reverse of 2022 Knights of the Past 1 oz Silver Coins. In this official design, two armored knights appear holding up a shield. This image is then placed as a decoration on the shield of a Maltese knight who stands in the background.
History
The Knights of Malta began as the Knights Hospitaller, who were affiliated with a hospital in present-day Italy. Formed in 1099 as members of the Roman Catholic Church, the Knights established care centers for sick pilgrims journeying to and from the Holy Land. In time the Knights would join forces with the Crusades before setting up headquarters in Malta in the 16th century.
