The 2023 Bullion Britannia Gold 1oz Coin redefines security in the bullion market. Created by the team behind the United Kingdom’s new-style 1 coin (dubbed the ‘world’s most secure coin’), Britannia has evolved once more to spearhead the best security technology available and lead the way as the most visually secure coin in the world. Philip Nathan’s award-winning Britannia from 1987 is the enduring symbol of a nation, boldly standing beside a shield that bears the Union Flag, a symbol of Britain’s strength, and holds an olive branch representing peace. Nathan’s Britannia is as beautiful as ever, struck in 999.9 fine gold, now enhanced with four landmark features. In the lower left-hand of the design, below Britannia’s flowing gown, is a trident to represent her naval history. As the viewer changes their perspective this trident becomes a padlock, emphasizing the coin’s secure nature. Surface animation reflects the movement of waves, and fine details like the Union Flag on Britannia’s shield have been carefully highlighted in the coin’s bullion finish. These added security features both decorate and protect the coin, just as the micro-text that borders the design states – DECUS ET TUTAMEN, or AN ORNAMENT AND A SAFEGUARD.

Sculptor Philip Nathan, the designer of the first Britannia bullion in 1987, envisaged her as a classic and evolving icon. In this classic design she stands firm against a powerful gale which whips around her shield, Corinthian helmet and olive branch. Queen Elizabeth’s portrait sits in front of a patterned texture field.

These 2023 Gold Britannia Bullion Coins are brand new from the Royal Mint, stored in mint tubes in a temperature controlled vault. Quantities of 10 are shipped in unopened mint tube. Single and smaller quantities of coins are carefully pulled from a new mint tube with lint-free, white cotton gloves and placed into their own individual coin flips.
