Obverse
The obverse of the 2011 1 oz American Buffalo Coin displays a Native American figure, an evocative portrayal initially designed by James Earle Fraser for the 1913 Buffalo nickel. This dignified depiction, presenting three distinct chiefs who served as models for Fraser, gazes to the right. Inscriptions read LIBERTY, F, and 2011.
Reverse
On the reverse side of the 2011 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin, an imposing bison graces the scene, facing left. Speculations suggest this design may pay homage to Black Diamond, a renowned bison from the Central Park Zoo, frequented by Fraser. Youll find inscriptions that read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, $50, 1 OZ, .9999 FINE GOLD.
History
The American Gold Buffalo coin came about thanks to the 2005 Presidential $1 Coin Act. The bill was initially introduced in July 2004 but wasnt passed by the Senate until November 18th, 2005. On December 22nd of that year, President George W. Bush signed the bill into law. The release of the Gold Buffalo enabled the United States Mint to both re-introduce the famous Buffalo nickel design and also to mint its first-ever 24-karat gold coin.
