History
The inaugural release in 1986 witnessed the highest-ever mintage figure for the 1/2 oz Gold Eagle, with 599,566 coins sold by the US Mint. Demand sharply declined the following year to just 131,255 coins. Over the years, the 1/2 oz gold bullion coin surpassed the 100,000 coin threshold in mintage only three times.
American Gold Eagle 1/2 oz coins wouldnt surpass 100,000 again until 1998 when 169,029 coins were produced. The second-highest all-time mintage figure for the 1/2 oz coins came in 1999 when 263,013 were struck. The third time the coins exceeded 100,000 was in 2009 during the Great Recession when 110,000 coins were struck and sold.
