On the reverse side, you’ll find John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle design from 1986. Mercanti served as the Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from 1986 until his retirement in 2010.

Following the record-setting 40 million coins in 2011, the US Mint recorded sales of 34.8 million American Silver Eagle coins in 2012. Such variations are expected after anniversary years, akin to the spike in 2006 following the 20th-anniversary celebration.
The standard 2012-W Proof American Silver Eagle had a total mintage of 877,731, representing only a modest decrease. The primary drop occurred in the bullion coin category, falling from 40 million in 2011 to 33.7 million in 2012.
