  • Ships to you securely in protective plastic!
  • First introduced in 1967!
  • Designed by Otto Schultz and Coert Steynberg.
  • Contains 1 oz of 22-karat gold (.9167).
  • Honors Boer statesman Paul Kruger on the obverse.
  • Springbok antelope on the reverse
  • One of the most popular bullion coins in history.

Our Krugerrand coins, with various years of issue, may show signs of wear from handling, like abrasions or light wear. We cannot guarantee a specific year or condition, but buying multiples may result in receiving matching coins.

Design

While bearing legal tender status, these coins do not feature a face value engraving. The obverse showcases Paul Kruger, the four-term President of the South African Republic, and the reverse features the springbok, a native antelope and national symbol. Created by Coert Steynberg, this iconic image had previously adorned South African five shilling coins.

History

The South African Gold Krugerrand, introduced in 1967, was the first official bullion coin in South Africa. It marked the beginning of private gold ownership through commemorative gold bullion coins. This coin held the market uncontested for over 12 years until the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf emerged as the first challenger.

Between 1967 and 1979, nearly 22 million South African Gold Krugerrands were sold in the U.S. alone. Despite historical embargoes due to apartheid policies, the Krugerrand remains popular, now available in bullion and proof, with fractional weights of oz., oz., and 1/10 oz.
