This Brilliant Uncirculated Effigy Mounds Iowa Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coin is the first of 2017 and the 36th overall in the America the Beautiful Coins Program. The reverse design of this silver bullion coin depicts an aerial view of mounds in the Marching Bear Group. Inscriptions are “EFFIGY MOUNDS,” “IOWA,” “2017,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Design candidates were developed in consultation with representatives of Effigy Mounds National Monument.

Effigy Mounds National Monument was established in 1949 and protects one of the largest remaining concentrations of ancient American Indian earthworks in the United States – the Effigy Mounds. The majority of the mounds were constructed between one thousand and two thousand years ago – often to inter the dead, but sometimes for ceremonial purposes, or to tell important stories. It’s considered a sacred landscape by members of many modern-day tribes whose ancestors once lived there.

The park is home to more than 200 mounds in a wide variety of forms, including more than 30 animal or bird-shaped “effigy” mounds for which the park is named. Often more than 100 feet long individually, many of these animal and bird shaped mounds are perched high atop rugged bluffs overlooking the adjacent Mississippi River. Aside from preserving these tangible links to an ancient and highly creative people, the park features outstanding views of the Mississippi River Valley, and hosts many of the native plant and animal communities that sustained people in this area for millennia.

The 5 oz silver America The Beautiful Coins (ATB’s) all resemble a Washington quarter but are significantly larger (76.20 millimeter diameter) and contain 99.9% silver at a weight of 155.5 grams. Each coin depicts a United States National Park on the reverse and John Flanagan’s 1932 portrait of George Washington on the obverse. Inscriptions on the obverse are UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR. The edges of these 5 oz silver bullion coins are smooth and contain the incused inscription: .999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE. The coin will be sent to you in a protective Capsule.
